The ‘challenging’ advice Johnny Sexton gave new Ireland captain
2024/02/10

New Ireland captain Caelan Doris has sought advice from former captain Johnny Sexton ahead of his first match in charge. Doris, who will play as openside against Italy, took over as skipper during their Six Nations opener when Peter O'Mahony was sin-binned and subsequently replaced. With O'Mahony injured, Doris will lead the team against Italy in Dublin and has spoken to Sexton for guidance. Doris expressed a mix of emotions about the role, but considers it a great honour. He has been advised by Sexton to "be himself" and lead authentically. Doris has taken over the captaincy from James Ryan, who has faced disciplinary issues. Doris is eager to develop his leadership skills and wants to continue growing in that area. He acknowledges the stress and added responsibilities that come with the role but finds it rewarding. Head coach Andy Farrell has encouraged Doris to lead in his own way and not rely on pre-prepared speeches.
