This idea, revealed by Robert Kirkman in the annotations of Walking Dead Deluxe #76, would have made Davidson a dark mirror for Rick Grimes, showcasing a different outcome for leadership. However, Kirkman decided to scrap this idea and introduced Negan instead. This creative decision allowed Negan to become a central character and added more creative freedom to the story. While the trajectory of Davidson's character can only be speculated, Kirkman stands by his choice to bring in Negan.
