LISTEN: Willie Nelson Sings Toby Keith's Don't Let the Old Man In
2024/02/09

Willie Nelson's cover of Toby Keith's "Don't Let the Old Man In" deserves recognition, despite Keith's iconic version. Nelson, a country legend at 90 years old, recorded the song for his 2020 album, "First Rose of Spring." At the time, Nelson's rendition held a special significance, as his time on Earth felt more precious. On the other hand, Keith's version was inspired by Clint Eastwood, an octogenarian. However, as Keith's battle with cancer became more apparent in 2023 and 2024, his original version of the song took on a different meaning. A powerful performance at the 2023 People's Choice Country Awards left the audience in tears, and just a few months later, Keith tragically passed away at the age of 62. Nelson paid tribute to Keith on social media, but his own cover of "Don't Let the Old Man In" may serve as a fitting tribute as well. While the two versions sound similar, Nelson's unique vocals add a personal touch to the lyrics.
