Louis Gossett Jr., 'Officer and a Gentleman,' Star Dead at 87

Legendary actor Louis Gossett Jr. has passed away at the age of 87 in Santa Monica. Gossett, who was the first Black man to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "An Officer and a Gentleman," had a celebrated career in both film and television.

Born in NYC, Gossett received critical acclaim for his work on Broadway, as well as an Emmy for his role in the groundbreaking TV series "Roots." He also won a Golden Globe for his performance in the TV movie "The Josephine Baker Story."

Throughout his career, Gossett starred in numerous films and TV shows, including "Enemy Mine," "Sadat," and the "Iron Eagle" film series. His last credit was in the 2023 remake of "The Color Purple."

Gossett courageously battled prostate cancer, which was caught in the early stages. He is survived by his sons Satie and Sharron. Louis Gossett Jr. leaves behind a lasting legacy in Hollywood.
