Henry Cavill's spy comedy film "Argylle" is proving to be a major disappointment at the box office. Despite boasting a star-studded cast including Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Sam Rockwell, and Samuel L. Jackson, the film only earned $6.5 million in its opening weekend. This is far from enough to cover its rumored $200 million budget. Deadline reports that the film's poor performance is expected to continue, with projections indicating a 62 percent drop in its second weekend. In order to break even, "Argylle" would need to earn around $300 million, but it currently stands at less than $30 million after two weeks.
One of the film's challenges was its negative early reviews, which dampened audience interest. Another factor was its release date, as January and February are typically slow months for movies, and the film opened the week before the Super Bowl. Additionally, "Argylle" lacked an established brand or pre-existing audience, making it a risky venture from the start.
